“Skills for Success” will be the main theme of this year’s annual “CHOICES Career & Education Expo’ set for Tuesday March 30 at The Alfred Sangster Auditorium at the University of Technology (UTECH) in Kingston from 9a.m. – 5p.m..
On that day secondary-level students from across the island will converge on the venue in order to get information on career, education and life issues and to view an exhibition featuring relevant information to help them in making wise career decisions.
At this 10th staging of this event, visitors will also experience a lively stage programme featuring a series of career talks highlighting the importance of the academic, professional and vocational skills mixture; a fun-filled programme of short presentations, quizzes, special guests, prizes and surprise give-aways. For anyone who needs it, one-to-one counselling by trained career will also be available.
The annual presentation for counsellors, principals, teachers and other adults will be on the subject: “Whither Our Boys?” It will look at the historical and sociological factors which are now adding to present-day problems of under-achievement amongst male students.
There will also be a special talk for boys entitled “Boys to Men” with a view to helping them to develop the life skills required to make it through school and life.
According to Angela deFreitas, General Manager of CHOICES Career Advice, organisers of the show, “This once-a-year experience is sometimes life-changing for many of these youngsters, some of whom are being shown many options which they had not previously known of or considered”. She goes on to say, “We are especially encouraging the participation of 5th and 6th form graduating students before they begin their exams and 3rd formers as they consider choosing subjects. It’s an opportunity for a one-stop shopping for all opportunities and also for exposure to the many possibilities out there for them”.
Two additional stagings of the show will take place in Mandeville in June and Montego Bay in October.
